Ozarks Extreme Makeover Day 3: The Rebuild Begins

Jeremy Elwood, SBJ ReporterA lot can change in 24 hours.

That’s the lesson learned on Day 3 of the build for ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in Ash Grove.

At mid-afternoon Wednesday, the old one-bedroom house of Chris and Niki Hampton was still standing, and the family’s barn had just been demolished.

What a difference a day makes.

At mid-afternoon today, the foundation has been poured, concrete is set and walls are going up.

The site has transformed from an atmosphere of waiting and anticipation to a beehive of activity – volunteers in blue shirts scurrying back and forth, hammering walls, guiding beams into place and looking for more to do.

But in a reminder of the constant threat of Ozarks weather, the tents for media and volunteers had to be closed up as a storm rolled in. But workers trudged on through the rain.

That dedication is evident in the hundreds of companies and organizations that have donated time, materials and other support.

And yet, more is needed. Builders and decorators still have a laundry list of materials that are needed, mostly interior furnishings or décor items. Event organizers ask anyone to visit the build Web site, www.millstoneextremedream.com, and check the list to see if there’s anything they can donate.

With 3,500 volunteers on site, it’s apparent that every little bit helps.
