Chamber’s Anderson to start new job July 7

Brian Brown, ReporterOutgoing Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jim Anderson told the Springfield Business Journal yesterday he plans to release an announcement next week about a new position he’ll be taking after he leaves the chamber.

Anderson declined to say what the new job would be, only saying the new venture would begin on July 7.

“I haven’t even told the staff, but I will do that before the public announcement,” Anderson said. “I can tell you my last day here will be June 30, and I’ll start the new job July 7.”

He said he intended to maintain confidentiality about the position until next week.

“Probably on the 23rd is when we’ll have the announcement on what I’ll do next. It will be a week from today at the earliest, maybe even the middle part of next week, but it will be announced next week,” Anderson said.

Earlier this month, Springfield Business Journal Web Editor Geoff Pickle contacted Anderson after receiving an anonymous news tip that he would take a position at Missouri State University.

Anderson would neither confirm nor deny that he was taking a job at MSU. At the time, President Clif Smart told SBJ he was not aware of any such move.

Nicki Donnelson, a public relations specialist at the university, said this morning MSU officials don’t believe Anderson is coming to the school.

“I have followed up with both President Smart and Provost [Frank] Einhellig, and they both assured me there is no substance to this rumor. Jim will be speaking at an upcoming commencement, though,” Donnelson said in an email.

Anderson, a graduate of MSU, announced in February he was retiring this summer from the Springfield chamber after 26 years with the organization. On Thursday, the Springfield chamber is hosting a reception honoring Anderson’s years of service from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Old Glass Place, 521 E. St. Louis St.

The chamber has hired Cleveland, Ohio-based search firm Waverly Partners LLC and commissioned a search committee comprising board members and community leaders to select the next president and CEO.

Springfield chamber Chairman Jeff Schrag said the search process is ongoing, but declined to provide any details on when or how a successor would be named. He said no timetable has been set for naming the next president and CEO.

Anderson said previously that Rob Dixon, executive vice president of the chamber, would serve as interim president and CEO until a successor is named.
