My Day with the Chocolatier

Emily Letterman, Features Editor

Shawn Askinosie is much more than just a chocolate maker.

As a lover of all things chocolate, I expected to taste some of Shawn’s work as I followed him May 5 for Springfield Business Journal’s annual Day in the Life series. What I didn’t expect was his level of commitment.

D12 showcases Springfield spirit, generosity

Emily Letterman, Features Editor
If you followed the hashtag #SBJD12 on Twitter last night, you shared in the excitement. If you didn’t, you missed one heck of a party.

The DoubleTree Hotel played host to more than 200 people for the 2015 Springfield Business Journal Dynamic Dozen awards honoring the area’s fastest growing companies and the individuals who drive growth across the region. The game-show themed night included audience trivia from emcee Eldon Combs, host of “The Trivia King Show” on Jock 98.7 FM, music from “The Price is Right” and a countdown of businesses from 12 to one.

Reporter’s Notebook: Another look inside the Heer’s building

Emily Letterman, Features Editor

It’s been 10 months since I’ve seen the inside of the Heer’s building downtown. My, how things have changed.

Media, city officials and local leaders got our first look at construction progress to the 100-year-old building during a media tour this morning. Instead of a gaping hole running through multiple floors and into the basement, there sits the beginnings of a lobby.

#SBJ4040: A party with purpose

It was a party with a cause last night as Springfield Business Journal celebrated the 2015 class of 40 Under 40.

With nearly 450 in attendance, the Ramada Plaza Hotel & Oasis Convention Center played host to the 17th annual awards ceremony, which honored individuals under the age of 40 for their personal accomplishments in civic and professional arenas. And true to form, the office phone rang nonstop yesterday as people clamored for last-minute tickets to the sold-out event. Continue reading ‘#SBJ4040: A party with purpose’

What’s up with those letters on top of the Heer’s building?

Emily Letterman, Features Editor

Just about everything to do with the renovation of downtown Springfield’s iconic Heer’s building seems to light up social media.

When owner Dalmark Development Group LLC posted a sign saying “See you in 2015!” halfway up the eight-story building’s east wall, it was in my Twitter feed for days using just about every Instagram filter available.

FD’s Grill House of magical wonder

Brian Brown, Reporter
The words just flow off the digital page: “Jared Enterprises,” “being constructed,” and “nearest location.”

So intriguing.

How about this line: “The restaurant’s menu would feature a range of blackened, fried and grilled fish options, as well as steaks, burgers, ribs, pies and salads.”

My Day with the President

Emily Letterman, Features Editor

Unlike my Day in the Life subject last year, Clif Smart never offered me a beer.

Having followed the Missouri State University president on Twitter for some time, I knew Clif had a sense of humor, but I didn’t know what to expect in a professional office setting. So, when I met him bright and early at 7:20 a.m. April 21 for Springfield Business Journal’s Day in the Life series, I was ready for anything. Continue reading ‘My Day with the President’
